IN THE MEDICINE WHEEL: MAKING SUBLIME FLOWER ESSENCES

Late Spring of 2020 begins the official flower essence launch in the medicine wheel garden. Today is June 5, 2020, and it’s a full moon, and lunar eclipse, in Scorpio. The first flower essence has been made. The Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia polyacantha), in near-neon pink and yellows. 

June 20, 2020, marks the summer solstice (for the northern hemisphere) with the moon in sensual Taurus. Today is all about what is in a name, the Rose, primarily Rosa ‘Icecap’ with Rosa ‘Peace’. 

July 4, 2020, is both a full moon and a lunar eclipse in Sagittarius. Three flower essences are wanting to be made today. First is Delphinium (Delphinium elatum ‘Aurora Blue’), commonly known as Candle Larkspur.

Second for today, but second to none, is Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota). It is spectacular, truly, the bee’s knees.

And third for today, Clematis must be part of the mix. This flower essence has mainly ‘Roguchi’ with a pinky lavender Clematis ‘Victoria’.

August 18, 2020, is a new moon in Cancer. Today three essences are being made. The first is the Sumatran Lily (Lilium oriental ‘Sumatra’). The pictures don’t quite show the full depth of the red tones, very seductive.

The second for today is Calendula (Calendula officinalis). Such cheerful yellow-oranges here!

And the third for today is such a luscious beauty, Hibiscus (Hibiscus ‘Perfect Storm’), in lovely pinks.

September 2, 2020, marks the full moon in Aquarius. Two essences are wanting to be made today. First, in sweet and lovely pinks, Happy-To-Be-Here Cosmos (Cosmos bipannatus).

And the second essence to made today, ever brightly shining, is the Sunflower (Helianthus annuus). 

September 22, 2020, is the autumnal equinox (for the northern hemisphere), and the moon is in Scorpio. Today three essences are being made. First is an incredible Salvia (Salvia ‘Raspberry Delight’). The magenta is so rich!

And second today, is the Iris, named after the goddess of the rainbow. This white Iris (Iris ‘Immortality’) is a re-bloomer, and has an incredible scent to boot.

And last but not least for today, and the 2020 Season, is this near-glowing ultraviolet Gentian (Gentiana ‘True Blue’).

2021 has been an interesting year so far, and the call to make more flower essences has been heard. May 26, 2021, is a full moon, and a lunar eclipse, in deep Scorpio. Three essences are wanting to be made today. First up is the precious Forget-Me-Not (Myosotis sylvatica). 

Second for today is the sweet Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) in both lavender and white. It has such a beautiful fragrance.

And last for today is Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum). These lime colored flowers are so delicate.

July 23, 2021, marks the full moon in Sagittarius. Strongly called to make three essences today. First is the self-contained Coreopsis (Coreopsis grandiflora ‘Heliot’). It has a depth and complexity with the deep burgundy centers and the orangish yellow petals.

Second for today is Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla sericata ‘Gold Strike’). The dainty flowers seem to hold much mystery.

And last but not least for today, and the 2021 season, German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla recutita), offering much cheer and hope.

The flowers from 2023 have been so beautiful. June 21, 2023, marks the summer solstice, and the moon is in Cancer. The first of the three essences wanting to be made today is Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata).The pink is so soft and sweet.

Next for today is comforting Comfrey (Symphytum officinale).

And last for today is the wise Sage (Salvia officinalis). The purple colors are so beautiful and the fragrance is sumptuous.

July 3, 2023, and the full moon is in Sagittarius. Another auspicious opportunity to make some lovely essences. First today of the three being made is the sweet ‘Caroline’ Clustered Bellflower (Campanula glomerata ‘Caroline’).

Second for today is the very tall and aspiring Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) in bright yellows and golds.

And the third for today is the delicate but powerful Cilantro (Coriander sativum). The little white flowers are such a source of light.

August 1, 2023, and it’s a full moon, and a super moon, in Capricorn. There were three essences wanting to be made on this powerful day. And the first is the gentle Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus).

The second for today is the powerful and glistening Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), like a knight in shining armor.

Hark, the third for today, the mighty beauty of the Trumpet Lily is here (Lilium longiflorium). The incredible scent announces without a sound.

August 30, 2023, is a full moon, and a blue moon, in Aquarius. There are two essences longing to be made today. The first is the regal yet humble Mugwort (Artemisiae vulgaris).

And the second one for today, and the last for the 2023 season, is the nourishing and magical Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo).

June 6, 2024, and the new moon in Taurus seems apt for making lovely essences in the wheel. First up of the three for today is sweet Wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) in purply blues.

Next up for this day, the beautiful pink Fairy Rose (Rosa ‘The Fairy’). And there is quite a buzz about this prolific bloomer.

And last for this lovely day, it is the intoxicating Poppy (Papaver somniferum) in coral orange.

June 21, 2024, and the full moon is in Sagittarius. Today is another beautiful moment to bring forth some lovely essences. First of the three to be made is the ringing bell of the Golden Columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha).

The second for today, carpe diem, is the glorious coral Tiger Day Lily (Hemerocallis fulva).

And last for today, but not least, is the levitating Peaches & Cream Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) in frilly shows of golds and pinks. Sweet!

July 5, 2024 and the new moon is in Gemini. It felt like an innocently lovely day for making flower essences. The first flower is the Onion, in delicate white blooms.

Second for today, saying, “I do,” is Wedding Candles. This verbascum is striking in burgundy and white with gold.

And third for today is the incredible Nigella. The blue is lovely, but so is the intricate, almost lace-like, green foliage, that may have something to do with the common name for this flower, love-in-a-mist.

July 21, 2024, and the full moon in Capricorn is an auspicious blessing for making flower essences. Additionally, the sun in Cancer is in opposition to Pluto in Capricorn, making for an “interesting” dynamic. First up is the amazing Tiger Lily, much adored by hummingbirds.

Next for today is Bee Balm in lavender hues. Also a hummingbird favorite.

And the last one for today cleans up nicely: Soapwort. The soft pink of these sweet flowers is refreshing.
